The demands of today’s world require that learners engage with complex texts, interpret information presented in multiple formats, extract and use evidence from texts, and build content knowledge. What does this look like in the English language classroom? To meet these demands, teachers can adopt high-leverage instructional practices that promote greater rigor in English language programs. High-leverage practices are those that: 1) scaffold learning; 2) address academic language; 3) promote collaborations; and 4) prompt higher-order thinking. In this workshop, the presenter demonstrates high-leverage practices that provide the supports needed for success, for example, graphic organizers used as while-reading/while-listening tasks to help learners recognize text structure and organize information, language frames to allow learners to express complex ideas clearly, or questioning routines that prompt critical thinking. Audience members participate in demonstrations of high-leverage practices and then practice applying the practices to content they teach in their own settings.
