Learning a language is not just about repeated practice - it is also about the feedback loops that inform that practice. Starting from a robust definition of formative assessment, we will see how learning technologies allow us to construct new and powerful feedback loops, ranging from agile in-class peer discussion/instruction setups, all the way to course-long evolving rubric frameworks. A key component of our discussion will be transparency: the most effective formative assessment processes enhance learner metacognitive skills, making it easier for them to learn to learn.
