The 21st century has seen much innovation in technology and social media. How can teacher educators and trainers utilize emerging technologies and social media tools to design effective teacher professional development (PD) programs? Based on her research and practical experiences in online distance TESOL PD with English teachers from over 100 countries, the presenter will share her successes and challenges in using 21st century technologies to engage English teachers in effective online learning communities. She will share examples from her global online programs, Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), and social media initiatives focused on teaching English to young learners. From real-time to asynchronous interactions, from text-based to video-based communications, the examples shared will illustrate how online TESOL PD can be effective for building communities of practice for English teachers around the world.
